Orange city street has a linear parcel of land adjacent to it, that has to be developed as a commercial district. It is 5.5 kilometers long stretch with ROW of 24m, currently with residential and mixed-use development on one side of the stretch. This has been a poorly lit street with very few/ negligible footpaths encroached by vendors, eateries and parking. This road is perpendicular to the Wardha road serving as one of the arterial roads I the city also serving the purpose of last mile connectivity. It hosts 2 weekly markets for all the vegetable, fruit and daily need vendors and 1 daily market near Khamla junction.
To improve this street, we identified the ongoing activities throughout and developed public places and Non-Motorized Infrastructure (NMT Infrastructure) along the stretch. Envisioning good public spaces required well lit environment, inclusive spaces to all age groups, genders and economic groups. We made the designs on the principles of universal accessibility for user comfort with ramps, bollards, refuge islands considering the junction geometry.
We also provided parking spaces at regular interval to accommodate the necessary parking demands on site. Seating have been provided throughout the street for people to enjoy the walking and cycling experience. Green buffer between the footpaths and vehicular carriageway has been provided for safety and comfort of the pedestrians.
Beatification of the spaces using eye catchy elements such as pergolas, sculptures and greenery. We have provided designated space for informal vendors to park their carts without hampering the bicycle and pedestrian movement. The street has also been equipped with bio-toilets so as to facilitate people with washroom emergencies.
The street used to be poorly lit and hence a crime spot. Project has ensured proper lighting throughout the stretch for pedestrian comfort and improved walking and cycling experience. The street encompasses 2 school zones that are being developed in a children friendly manner to ensure children safety with restricted speeds for vehicular traffic and engaging public spaces for students to wait and interact.
Street has been equipped with engaging murals and wall paintings to improve the walking experience, shade giving trees have been provided at spaces with lack of shade during the day time for user comfort in all seasons. Little details such as reflective tapes on bollards for easy visibility have been taken care of in the design. All the entry exits have been equipped with tactile tiles for warning the visually impaired people.
